Preschool and Childcare Center Executive Director

The South Whidbey Children’s Center (SWCC), located on South Whidbey Island in Langley, WA, has a current opening for an Executive Director.  SWCC is a sweet, rural, not-for-profit early learning center offering a play-based developmental curriculum with a team teaching approach to over 100 children ages 1 to 11 years.  We are outstanding in our field as innovators and progressive educators. Our facilities include four classrooms with attached playground/gardens. SWCC has been a vital part of our community for 40 years. The majority of our teaching staff has been with us for over 10 years.

We seek a warm, dynamic, creative leader to join our exceptional team, which includes a program supervisor, office manager, 12 full-time teachers, and 8 part-time teachers.  The Executive Director should be a thoughtful listener, an organized and creative thinker, and an excellent communicator, who brings energy and sound judgment to facilitate relationships, work collaboratively, address needs and build community.

The overall responsibility of the Executive Director is to ensure the delivery of a best practice preschool, childcare and school-age curriculum while managing over a half a million dollar annual budget.  The Executive Director will need to oversee our NAEYC accreditation, maintain our high rating with Early Achievers and comply with all licensing regulations by Washington State’s Department of Children, Youth and Families.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree or higher in early childhood education, education or child development

Proficiency with QuickBooks and Excel

Experience in personnel management including hiring, supervising, and training staff

Financial management including: budget preparation and oversight of purchasing, billing and tuition collection                                                                                                                                                                                                                Minimum of two year’s experience working with pre-school/school-age children

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

Fund development expertise including events, individual giving campaigns, and grant preparation

Passion for play-based learning and whole-child focus

Ability to develop effective relationships and collaborate with other organizations in the community


Preferred Qualifications:                              

Experience with High/Scope curriculum development and implementation

Program marketing experience

Experience working with a non-profit organization and reporting to a Board of Directors


NOTES: Salary Information:  $42,000-$56,000 salary; commensurate with experience and degree; sick/personal days, holidays, vacation, quarterly bonus structure
